As the narrator arrives on The story is scary on two different levels. Poe was trying to present death as being so horrific that others involved would be affected by what was to come.
For example, Usher's house, its windows, bricks, Poeuses Symbolism and analogies in both characters and setting to tell this gothic tale of death anddownfall.
In the end he regains his senses but only because he flees from the house. Life after death was the underlying meaning to this story. One story in which we see Poe's talent at work is "The Fall of the House of Usher," where decay takes place on a mental and physical level, heightening the suspense for which Poe is so well-known.
Roderick Usher is a victim of circumstance. The effect the house has on the narrator is significant because it demonstrates the power of the house and how it deserves attention as an independent character in the story. These narrators, ranging from innocent bystanders to psychotic murderers, add depth to such a short story and really allow Poe to explore the themes of death and murder which he seems to have an unhealthy obsession towards.
For example, authors such as Henry Thoreau and Ralph Emerson were dominating the world of poetry and prose with their tales of nature.
